In February, I was honored to be approved as the new President of the Kansai Club.
My name is Fumio “Muu” Maruyama.
I was born in Osaka and raised in Yao, still Osaka but close to Nara, and I graduated from Kansai Gaidai University with a degree in Spanish.
Yao is famous for Kawachi cotton and historic landmarks, but above all, it is known for Kawachi Ondo—a traditional folk song with roots in the Muromachi period that continues to evolve by incorporating elements such as rakugo, jazz, blues, and reggae.
In 2017, Yao set a Guinness World Record with 2,872 dancers performing Kawachi Ondo in yukata, and the tradition continues to thrive. Kawachi Ondo represents a living, evolving culture that connects generations.
I joined the Kansai Club in 2009 shortly after moving from San Francisco, when I happened upon a lively welcome BBQ at a nearby park. The warm, family-like atmosphere immediately drew me in. Since then, I have served in various leadership roles, including two terms as President (2014–2018), and most recently as dance leader for “Team Kawachi Ondo.”
Following the sudden passing of our former president, my partner, last year, I was reminded that Kansai Club is truly a community—one where we support, laugh, and even grieve together.
A great mentor once taught me that when challenges arise, we must decide whether to face them as valuable experiences or let go of what we cannot control.
Inspired by that wisdom, I believe we should embrace challenges positively and move forward with resilience and joy.
Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the LA Kansai Club since Naniwa Kai. Together with our new board members, we will cherish connections, warmth, and fun, living by the spirit of “You only live once—enjoy it!”
This year’s theme is “Ookini!” (Thank you “very much”!!). While we may not be able to offer as many activities as before, we will do what we can, with spirit of Kansai, gratitude and teamwork. Our goal is to create a club where members feel, “That was fun—I’m glad I came.”
We sincerely appreciate your continued support.
